Mavs Tie Finals

March 28, 2010 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The ABA Championship Finals moved from Owensboro, KY where the Defending ABA Champions, the Kentucky Bisons won a close 99-96 victory in Game 1 to Port Arthur, TX and the Parker Multipurpose Center on the campus of Lamar State College - Port Arthur where Game 2 was played on Saturday night.

Game 2 started out fast and furious just like Game 1 with the Bisons scoring the first 5 points of the game. From that point on Game 2 and this night belonged to the SETX Mavericks. Jermaine Blackburn scored the first basket for the Mavericks and Jon Rogers followed that up with another to cut the score to 5-4 at the ten minute mark of the first quarter. Blackburn's second basket put the Mavs in front and they never lost the lead after that for the remainder of night. Midway through the first period the Mavericks build an 11 point lead, but the Bisons bench got into the action with a run led by Lamar Owen to cut the lead to just 4 at the end of the first quarter. At the end of one period of play SETX led 26-22.

In the second period Mavs point guard Herman Favors got the Mavericks out and running and the Mavs build another double figure lead. Back-up Mavs center DeSean White hit key 3's during that stretch as the Mavs went back up by 11 with just a minute to play before halftime. Jamie Jackson cut into the lead when he was fouled at the buzzer as he attempted a last second three pointer. Jackson converted 2 of 3 free-throws and the Bisons trailed 49-40 at the half.

The third quarter belonged to the SETX Mavericks as Josh Pace and Blackburn got it going from both the outside and by attacking the basket for the Mavericks. The Mavs just kept attacking and built a 23 point lead heading into the last period of play.

The Bisons kept fighting, but could not cut into the Mavs lead. The Mavericks controlled the tempo and went on the take Game 2 of the ABA Championship Series 104-83 to even the series at 1-1 heading into the final game on Monday night.
