Mavs Earn Season Sweep Over Komets in 5-4 Win

FORT WAYNE, Indiana - The Missouri Mavericks won their 20th game of the season and earned a season sweep over the Fort Wayne Komets Wednesday night with a 5-4 win at Allen County War Memorial. Mavericks' forward Mike Berry had a pair of power play goals and the Mavericks scored three power play goals in a game for the first time this season. Forwards Ryan Jardine and Toby Lafrance each had a goal and an assist as the Mavericks improved to 20-13-3 and moved up in the Turner Conference standings. Missouri will return home Friday night to take on the Wichita Thunder at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m.

"We are heading home with two points and that was our goal," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We had good special teams tonight with three power play goals and we held the Komets off the board on the power play. Robby Nolan made a great save at the end to preserve the win."

Missouri took advantage of a major penalty to Komets' forward Colin Chaulk in the first minute of play. Chaulk's hit on Mavericks' forward Nick Sirota gave Missouri a full five-minute power play and the Mavericks scored a pair of goals on the man-advantage. Carlyle Lewis tipped a shot from Ray DiLauro to get the Mavericks on the board at the 3:04 mark. Berry scored the first of his two goals at 3:51 to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead on the five-minute power play. Berry added his second power play goal of the game and DiLauro earned his second assist at the 8:11 mark to give Missouri a three-goal lead.

Fort Wayne answered and cut the Mavs lead to 3-2 with a pair of goals just 38 seconds apart. Tab Lardner scored at the 11:09 mark and Artem Podshendyalov scored at 11:47, but the Mavericks bounced right back to take a 4-2 lead heading into the second intermission. Toby Lafrance scored his 10th goal of the season with under five minutes remaining in the period on assists from Ryan Jardine and Derek Pallardy.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period although the Komets outshot the Mavericks 11-7. Fort Wayne had a pair of power play opportunities in the second, and the Mavericks were scoreless on three man-advantages in the period.

Ryan Jardine scored in the first minute of the third period to give the Mavericks a 5-2 lead, and the goal proved to be the game winner as the Komets battled back yet again. Guy Dupuis made it a 5-3 game at the 13:37 mark and Neil Musselwhite scored with 3:49 remaining in the game.

In the final seconds with their goaltender pulled, the Komets came into the Mavericks zone and forced goaltender Robby Nolan to move from his right to left and the Mavericks' goaltender snagged the puck with his glove to preserve the win with just two-tenths of a second remaining in the game. Missouri finished 3-for-7 on the power play and killed all four of the Komets chances. The Mavericks have not allowed a power play goal in their last four games and the team has only allowed one power play goal in their last 10 games.

The Mavs will return home this Friday night, January 21 for a border showdown with rival Wichita Thunder before wrapping up the week by visiting the Thunder in Wichita on Saturday night.
