
Mavericks Win Tip-Off Classic

Beaumont, TX. The ABA Southeast Texas Mavericks battled from behind in the ABA Tip-Off Classic Championship Game on Saturday night to win a hard fought 114-111 game between two of the to top teams in the ABA. The Mavs came into the Classic pre-season ranked #2 in the nation in the ABA Power Rankings. With a second straight win over the #3 pre-season ranked Stars, it appears that the Mavs will move back into the #1 position when this week's ABA Power Rankings are released.
The Mavericks took its first lead of the night at the 5:37 mark of the fourth quarter and were behind by as many as 14 points in the second half. It looked for most of the night that the Music City Stars would capture the ABA's opening season Tip-Off Classic. The Mavs were not to be denied though and when Lamar Castile tipped in a missed Jon Rogers free-throw with 6.2 seconds to play, the Mavs took its final lead of the night and closed out a three point victory to clinch the ABA Tip-Off Classic Championship.
The Mavericks placed seven players in double figures with guards Lamar Castile and Mike Crain leading the way with 18 points apiece. Josh Pace added 17 plus 7 rebounds while Anthony Lumpkin chipped in 15 points and 6 assists. Frontline players Jon Rogers, DeRon Rutledge, and Joe Buck added 12, 10 and 10 points respectfully while Mavs center Jon Rogers also pulled down 18 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
The Stars strong effort was led by Rollie Smith's game high 25 points, Josh Copperwood and Odel Bradleyadded 19 and 16 respecively.
