Mavericks Win 18th Straight Game

March 4, 2011 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 Ranked SETX Mavericks (27-1) defeated their arch rival and Gulf Coast Division foe the Gulf Coast Flash (7-5) on Thursday night 119-98 at their NJEC Arena in Winnie, TX.

The Mavericks won their 18th straight game of the season and their 34th straight game at home. The Mavericks have compiled an amazing 59-2 record at home over the past three seasons in the ABA.

The Mavericks came out strong in the first quarter taking a 7-2 lead to start the game. Odell Bradley and PJ Cousinard set the tone with their scoring and passing. Working inside and out and using Post Players Jon Rogers and Alex Sanders the Mavs showcased their power game in the paint as they controlled the lane and the tempo in the first period of play. The Mavs absorbed a Gulf Coast 8-0 run and then went on a 6-0 run of their own at the end of the first quarter to spurt ahead and lead 28-19 after one period of play.

The Mavericks and Flash played at a feverish pace in the second quarter as Freeman Taylor put his stamp on the game. The Mavericks bench got into the act on court led by Brandon Davis and Desmond Cambridge. SETX won the second quarter 32-28 and took at 60-47 lead into the locker-room at halftime.

In the third quarter both teams play hard and well. Cambridge seemed to be everywhere and made play after play for the Mavericks, especially when it looked like Gulf Coast would cut into the Mavs lead. Each team would make runs, but it was the Mavericks spurted late in the quarter to take a 16 point lead into the fourth and final quarter of play.

In the last period Cambridge continued his all over the court mastery as he would collect 7 steals for the game. DeSean White came off the Mavericks bench to score 9 points in the final period and hit some crucial baskets when the Mavericks needed them most. SETX won the final quarter by five points (33-28) and went on to their record setting 27th victory on the season (breaking their team record 26 wins for the regular season set in 2008-09 when the Mavericks went 26-1 in regular season play).

Cambridge and Bradley led the Mavericks with 22 points apiece. Cousinard scored 16 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Brandon Davis again had another double/double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Myles Thrash scored 12 points as well on the night. Taylor, Luther Suggs, and Jordan Payne each scored 18 points respectively for the Flash. Taylor also pulled down a game high 15 rebounds.

The SETX Mavericks will be home Saturday night vs the 3rd Coast Ballers Travel Team from League City, TX. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
