Mavericks Take Southwest Region Championship

March 16, 2010 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The Southeast Texas Mavericks (24-3) won the Southwest Region Championship on Monday night and earned its second consecutive trip to the ABA Final Four with a dominating victory over the Texas Fuel from San Antonio, TX at the Parker Multipurpose Center on the campus of Lamar State College in Port Arthur, TX.

The Mavericks opened up the game by scoring the first six points behind "the Bookend Wings" as Jermaine Blackburn and Josh Pace set the tone and tempo of the game by scoring the first 3 baskets for SETX. The Mavs defense was stifling as the Fuel could get nothing going offensively from the inside or outside. After one period of play the Mavericks found themselves in control with a 33-18 lead.

In the second period of play the Mavericks defensive pressure just took over the game as the Mavs bench came into play and contributed to the defensive pressure with fresh legs. The Fuel, who was playing its second game in three nights just seemed to wither as the Mavericks lead grew to thirty points. The Mavericks led at the halftime break 74-43.

The Mavericks did not let up in the second half as they built their lead to 40 points midway through the third period of play. DeRon Rutledge, Anthony Lumpkin, Lamar Sanders, Kenny Dawkins, DeSean White, Mike Crain, and Currye Todd led a well balanced Mavericks bench and at the end of three quarters the Mavs led 109-60.

The SETX Mavericks did not let up in the final period and went on the win in dominating fashion with one of the largest victories in ABA Playoffs History with a 62 point victory!

The Mavericks will now host the ABA Western Championship against the San Francisco Rumble for the right to play in the ABA Championship Finals.
