Mavericks Sign Defenseman Lukas Bohunicky

February 8, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks announced Wednesday the Central Hockey League (CHL) club has signed defenseman Lukas Bohunicky.

Bohunicky, 24 (10/30/87), is a native of Bratislava, Slovakia and most recently played for HC Slovan Bratislava. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound defenseman is in his fifth professional season, and this will be his first time playing in North America since he played junior hockey for the Western Hockey League's Kootenay Ice. In his five seasons in Slovakia, Bohunicky accounted for five goals, 23 assists and 392 penalty minutes in 223 games played. He also accounted for five assists in 49 playoff games.

"We believe Lukas will be an impact player for us," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "He is a very reliable defenseman and has high level experience including playing in a pre-season game this year against the New York Rangers. He skates very well and will add more size and physicality to our blue line. Lukas also moves the puck up the ice efficiently helping to relieve pressure and better control the tempo of the game. We are very pleased to add this type of player to our roster at this time."

Prior to turning pro, Bohunicky played in one of the premier junior leagues in North America for the Kootenay Ice. In his two seasons with the Ice (2005-07), he had three goals and 13 assists in 130 games played.

The Mavs are in Rapid City, South Dakota for a pair of games this Thursday and Friday, February 9 and 10. The Mavericks will return to Independence Events Center on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18. Tickets for all regular season games are on sale via or by calling (800) 745-3000.
