Mavericks Send Rutledge into Retirement with Win

January 9, 2011 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mavericks (14-1) sent power forward DeRon Rutledge into retirement with a dominating 162-75 victory Saturday night at their Nutty Jerry's Entertainment Center (NJEC) in Winnie, TX.

It was vintage DeRon Rutledge at times Saturday night. The Jump Hook was on display and D-Rut (as he is referred to by teammates and coaches) even threw down two slam dunks. One of those slams ended the game as the fans in attendance cheered on the Legendary #22 Rutledge!

Rutledge and his Mavericks teammates were high octane on this night as they scored early and often to take complete control of the game! The Mavs displayed stifling defense again and just did not let the Rimrockers do much of anything on offense! It was just another impressive display of team defense by the Mavericks!

DeRon Rutledge hit on 13 of 18 shots to tally 28 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assist, and 1 steal on this his farewell night. It was the perfect way for this power forward to end his stellar career that has spanned over 15 years.

"He is the best that I've ever seen play on this level of pro basketball and it was my privilege to have coached him all of these years that we've been together as player and coach! With all of that said, I will remember DeRon as a better person that he was a player! He was special in every way!" stated Mavericks head coach Steve Tucker.

In a stirring ceremony at half-time Mavericks Owner Jerry Nelson honored Rutledge and his Family who were in attendance at the game. Flowers were presented to Rutledge's wife and mother. Then Rutledge was presented with a framed #22 jersey and the #22 was retired within the Mavericks Organization and will hang in the Nutty Jerry's Entertainment Center forever. Rutledge's #22 is the second number retired by the Mavericks and is the first Player's Number retired. The #1 was retired two seasons ago in honor of Jerry Nelson!

Rutledge led seven Mavericks in double figures for the game! Currye Todd scored 22 points in his most impressive performance of the season. Josh Pace, Odell Bradley, and Lamar Sanders each scored 20 points respectively. Sanders also added 17 rebounds and 5 assist in his best game as a pro over the last three seasons with the SETX. The Texas Rimrockers were led in scoring by Calvin Crosby with 21 points.

The SETX Mavericks will be back in action this Thursday night at home. Tip-off will be at 7:30 PM.
