Mavericks Return with Win

Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release


The Southeast Texas Mavericks got back into action after their longest layoff of the season with a 130-95 victory at home at the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX on Tuesday night.

The Mavericks behind Jermaine Blackburn's early 6 points came out fast to take a 10-4 lead. But the hot shooting of James Mann and Matt Madsen brought the Impact back to take a four point lead at the end of the first period of play. At the end of the first quarter is was Oklahoma 29 - SETX 25.

The Mavs running game got going in the second quarter and Southeast Texas came back to take an 8 point lead midway through the quarter. Josh Pace, Alex Sanders, and Herman Favors brought SETX back, but Oklahoma spurted again to cut the Mavericks lead to just 3 at the halftime break. Southeast Texas only led 58-55 at the half.

The third quarter was hotly contested as both teams displayed hot shooting. Reigning ABA MVP DeRon Rutledge exerted his will on the game and his inside scoring moved the #1 Mavericks to their largest lead of the game to that point. The Mavs went into the last quarter of play with a 10 point lead.

The final quarter totally belonged to the SETX Mavericks. Favors, Mike Crain, and Anthony Lumpkin led an assault on the Impact that broke the game open for the Mavericks. The Mavs opened up as much as a 40 point lead late in the quarter as they turned their defense up! SETX went on to win their 20th game of the season and clinched their 2nd consecutive ABA SW Division Championship with the victory.

MAVS SCORERS:

The Mavericks balanced scoring showed through again in this game as they placed 9 players in double figures. Josh Pace led the Mavericks with 22 points. Jermaine Blackburn and Alex Sanders each scored 20 points. Herman Favors continued his stellar play at point guard for the Mavs as he scored 17 points and also dished out 15 assist. DeRon Rutledge chipped in 13 points. Anthony Lumpkin and DeSean White followed up with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Impact was led by James Mann's 23 points and Anthony Brown's 21 points.

MAVS SUPERLATIVES:

* The SETX Mavericks clinched their 2nd consecutive ABA SW Division Championship. The Mavs are now "BACK TO BACK" SW Division Champions!

* The Mavericks are the first team in the ABA to win 20 games this season and now have had Back to Back 20 Win Seasons.

* The SETX Mavericks were again Ranked #1 in the ABA Power Rankings. The Mavericks have been ranked #1 in the Power Rankings for an Amazing 20 of the last 24 regular season weeks over the past 2 seasons in the ABA.

* The Mavericks hold a 47-5 record in their two seasons in the ABA and are 32-2 at Ford Arena.

* SETX Mavericks Head Coach Steve Tucker hit another milestone this season on Tuesday night by becoming the only coach in the ABA this Decade to record 100 wins. Tucker has gone 100-24 in four seasons in the ABA with 3 different ABA teams (SETX Mavericks, Jacksonville Jam, & Texas Tycoons). Coach Tucker was recently selected to the ABA's All-Decade Team!

MAVS NEXT GAME:

The Mavericks will travel to San Antonio, TX this weekend to take on the Texas Fuel on Sunday afternoon at 5 PM. The Mavs return home next Tuesday night, March 2nd when they will host the New Mexico Rimrockers at Ford Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
