Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mavericks (18-1) defeated Gulf Coast Division rival the Gulf Coast Flash (5-4) 115-89 at their NJEC Arena in Winnie, TX Saturday night and clinched their third straight Division Championship.
The Mavericks also won their 27th straight home game.
The Mavericks came out with all guns blazing on Saturday night. Myles Thrash, Josh Pace, and Currye Todd scored early baskets to put the Mavs up 10-2 to open the game. Luther Suggs led the Flash back as they closed the lead to six points midway through the first period. Alex Sanders and Brandon Davis led a Mavericks run to end the first period and give SETX a 26-12 lead after one period of play.
In the second quarter Suggs, Freeman Taylor, and Carl Henderson matched the Mavericks basket for basket. Pace, Odell Bradley, PJ Cousinard led the Mavericks as the Mavs led 52-34 at halftime.
The Flash came out of the locker-room to go on a 11-4 run to cut the Mavericks lead to 11 points four minutes into the second half. Thrash, Pace, and Davis scored key baskets to give the Mavs separation and control of the game once again. Heading into the final period of play SETX led by 19 points.
In the final period the Flash remained scrappy, but the Mavericks depth took over the game. Jon Rogers and Davis dominated the paint. Rogers blocked 4 of his 10 shots during a midway stretch of the fourth quarter. SETX went on to win its 18th victory of the season.
Thrash led six double figure scorers for the Mavericks with 21 points. Bradley added 14 points. Desmond Cambridge and Davis chipped in 13 points apiece. Pace followed up with 12 points. Alex Sanders put in 10 points. Suggs led Gulf Coast with 18 points and Freeman Taylor scored 17 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.
SETX will host the North Texas Fresh next Thursday night, February 3rd. Tip-off will be at 7:30 PM.
