Mavericks Fall to Stars

December 19, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The SETX Mavericks (6-1) felt defeat for the first time this season on the road in Kansas City as they fell 112-94 to a young and scrappy KC Stars (4-0) team. The Mavericks came out early and led twice in the first half by as many as eight points, but on this night at the Stars home at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City, MO the Stars were not to be denied as they fought back to lead 57-52 at halftime. The third quarter belonged to the Stars as they out scrapped and hustled the Mavs to take a 15 point lead leading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter Stars guard Nate Johnson led the stars to their biggest win thus far on the season by defeating the Mavericks and fighting off a late Mavs run that cut the Stars lead to just nine points with 5:30 to play. Johnson led a Stars surge that re-established their lead and led them to victory. The loss ended the Mavericks 30 game regular season winning streak that started in December of last season. The Mavericks streak is the longest in ABA History! MAVERICKS SCORING: The Mavericks were led in scoring by Jermaine Blackburn, Josh Pace, and Currye Todd who each scored 17 points respectively. DeRon Rutledge had 16 points and 8 rebounds in defeat. Mike Crain chipped in 12 points.

Mavericks Superlatives:

The Mavericks 30 game regular season win streak comes to an end as will their hold on the #1 ranking in the ABA Power Rankings, which they've now held for a record 14 consecutive regular season weeks starting back last season and continuing for the first 3 weeks of the 2009-10 ABA season. The SETX Mavericks 20 game winning streak at their home arena, the Ford Arena in Beaumont, TX remains in tact and is the longest active homecourt winning streak in the ABA. Mavericks Next Game: The Mavericks return home on Tuesday night, December 22nd as they host the Texas Chaparrals at Ford Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
