Mavericks Defeat Flash on the Road
January 20, 2011 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 ranked SETX Mavericks (16-1) defeated the #20 Gulf Coast Flash (5-3) in Gulfport, MS on Wednesday night 103-85.
The Flash were undefeated heading into the game at home and that included a home victory over the Mavericks back in December, which is the only loss of the season for SETX.
The Mavs came out firing on all cylinders and opened up a 9-2 lead as Odell Bradley and Myles Thrash got things going with early baskets. SETX maintained control of the game throughout the early going to take a 21-16 lead after one period of play.
The second quarter belonged to the Flash as their physical play allowed them to score easy baskets. Luther Suggs and Freeman Taylor led the way for Gulf Coast and the Flash led 41-38 at the half.
The Mavericks came out of the locker-room at halftime and blew the game open. The Mavs full-court pressure proved to be too much for the Flash as Desmond Cambridge. Hollis Giles, Josh Pace, Jon Rogers, and Brandon Davis seized control of the game for SETX. The Mavericks took a 73-57 lead into the final period of play.
In the final period the teams exchanged baskets and Southeast Texas fought off two Gulf Coast Flash runs (one run cutting the lead to just 8 points with 3:56 left to play). But key baskets by Rogers, Davis, Bradley, and newcomer PJ Cousinard sealed the Mavericks' 16th win of the season and avenged their only defeat.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Rogers 25 points. Bradley, who is establishing himself as a legitimate ABA MVP Candidate added 22 points. Newcomer Brandon Davis chipped 12 points and 9 rebounds. Lamar Sanders was the game's leading rebounder with10 rebounds. The Flash were led by Suggs 16 and Freeman's 12 points respectively.
The Mavericks return home to their Nutty Jerry's Entertainment Center (NJEC) next week when they host a home stand on Thursday and Saturday. They will play the North Dallas Vandals on Thursday and the Gulf Coast Flash on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 PM.
