Mavericks Crush Houston Takers 123-48

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mavericks (6-0) came out strong in the first quarter of their game with the Houston Takers (0-3) at Ford Arena on Saturday night. Mavericks perimeter players Jermaine Blackburn and Josh Pace set the tone with early baskets to move the Mavs out in front of the Takers from Houston, TX. The offensive play of Blackburn and Pace along with the dominating play inside by SETX center Jon Rogers helped the Mavericks take a commanding lead at the end of the first period of play 32-14. From there the Mavericks never looked back

In the second period reigning ABA MVP DeRon Rutledge got into the act with two quick baskets and point guard Mike Crain got the Mavericks out and running. Currye Todd and Keith Simpson continued their strong play for the Mavericks by coming off the Mavericks bench to continue the onslaught. Power forward Lamar Sanders also continued his strong play on both ends of the court for the Mavs. Rogers and Sanders dominated the paint for the Mavericks and back-up point guard Leonard Brown pressured the Takers guards into errors and turn-overs. At the half the Mavericks were in total command with a 70-25 lead!

The second half was no different and mid-way through the third quarter the Mavericks cleared their bench, but continued their stellar play. There was no let up by Southeast Texas on this night and the SETX Mavs cruised to a record setting 75 point victory over division foe the Houston Takers.

MAVERICKS SCORING:

Mavericks center Jon Rogers recorded the SETX Mavericks first triple double with a 13 point, 15 rebound, and 10 block shot game. Rogers has been dominating inside all season thus far this season for the Mavericks. The leading scorer for the Mavs for the game was forward Keith Simpson, who recorded a 21 point and 5 rebound effort for the Mavericks. Jermaine Blackburn chipped in 14 points and dished out 8 assist. Currye Todd continued his hot shooting off the Mavs bench with 13 points and he also pulled down 9 rebounds. DeRon Rutledge and Josh Pace followed up with 10 points each respectively for the Mavs.

Mavericks Superlatives:

This 75 point victory for the Mavericks was the largest in the team's two year history. The Mavericks also held the Takers to 20% shooting from the field for the game while holding Houston to 48 points for the game (all best for the Mavericks).

The Mavericks stretched it's ABA best regular season winning streak to 30 games over the last two seasons. With the victory on Saturday night the SETX Mavericks became only the second team in the history of professional basketball on any level to win 30 straight regular season games. Only the NBA's 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers hold a longer regular season winning streak at 33 games.

The Mavericks recorded is second straight win in the last three nights after defeating the Mississippi Blues on Thursday night at Ford Arena 109-72.

The Mavs now have won 20 consecutive games at Ford Arena!

Mavericks Next Game:

The Mavericks will leave on Monday traveling to Kansas City, MO where they will take on the Kansas City Stars on Wednesday night. The Stars are off to a good start this season and are undefeated. Kansas City was ranked 6th in last week's ABA Power Rankings. Tip-off for the game between the Mavs and Stars will be at 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening.
