Montgomery Bears News Release
Thirty-one (31) lovely young ladies turned out for the Montgomery Maulers Red Hots dancer/cheerleader tryouts at Eastdale Mall today. The tryouts were held at the Maulers office headquarters at the mall food court. Nancy Ikehara of Top Dogs Cheerleading is the director for the Maulers second year. "I'm very pleased with the turn out." Ikehara said. "The talent level is much higher than year." After an explanation of the rules by Maulers owner Jamie LaMunyon, the ladies were shown a dance routine by Director Ikehara then were given the opportunity to perform the routine before the director and three judges. This year's judges were Tony Huntley, Brent Wallace and Darin Gorilla. Huntley said that the selection will be more difficult this year because of the excellent talent.
Owner LaMunyon reported that there will be another tryout in late January. "We had many calls from girls at some of the area colleges saying that couldn't make this tryout because of final exams. Some were from Auburn University whose finals were today." she said. LaMunyon explained that the dancer/cheerleader core for the Maulers is "every bit as important" as the players. She said. "We receive as many requests for dancer personal appearances as we do for players.
Becoming a Red Hot Dancer is more involved than one might think. There is the expected talent, skill and experience requirement. Then there is the interview. Not unlike a beauty pageant, the contestants must answer a series of questions by the judges in a personal interview setting. "Every one of the girls selected to be a member of the Maulers Red Hots must win the 'Miss Congeniality' award." LaMunyon said. The Red Hots are always in the public eye at the games and in the community, she continued. "We expect them to have a positive attitude and a happy face and spend time greeting fans and signing autographs especially for the children." LaMunyon said.
Being a Mauler Red Hot is a volunteer position and gives the young ladies a great deal of exposure in the community "And we have a lot of fun." reported one of last years' dancers.
