Maulers Drown Morays

Montgomery, AL - The Montgomery Maulers kept their season alive on Saturday night as they beat the Miami Morays in the first round of the National Indoor Football League playoffs 63-35.

The Maulers went into halftime with a score of 45-23, which is a franchise record for most points scored in the first half.

Machion Sanders scored three touchdowns and recorded eight carries for 101 yards. Also in the passing game, Mareno Philyaw recorded 75 yards in five receptions for four touchdowns.

J.R. Richardson continued playing at the top of his game as he threw 22 passes for 14 completions for 155 yards and five touchdowns. Backup quarterback Dixie Wooten allowed Richardson to take a break in the second half. Wooten threw for 75 yards with five completions in seven attempts.

Defensively the Maulers stepped it up again this week. John Harrell had eight tackles with two assists and Eric Hudson had four tackles.

Also on defense Hudson, Andre Reed, Undre Crosby and Tim Parham all recorded one sack, which is the most sacks recorded in a game this season.

The Morays beat the Maulers in the running game racking up 157 yards in 26 carries but the Maulers came through in the passing game. Montgomery had 219 yards compared to Miami's 56 yards when going with the throw.

The Maulers will be back in action next Saturday in the second round of the NIFL playoffs as they play host to a team yet to be determined. Their opponent will be announced by Tuesday after all first round action has ended.
