Maulers debut this Saturday

March 16, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL) - Montgomery Bears News Release

Montgomery, AL – The Montgomery Maulers indoor football team will open their season this Saturday, March 19 against the Kissimmee Kreatures. This week head coach James Shiver reduced his roster to the league’s mandatory 25 players.

Over fifty percent of Shiver’s roster consists of “home-grown” talent. Eight individuals played their college ball at Alabama State University, including DL Robert Malone who had a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens. Also joining the team are five additional players from Troy University, including brothers Mareno and David Philyaw.

Among the players in the trenches for the Maulers this season are OL Duke Vaiga (6’4”, 375 lbs.) and OL Fred Barnett (6’6”, 330 lbs.). Rushing the opposing quarterback will be Cliff Darrington, an active duty police officer with the Montgomery Police Department.

“The Maulers have put together a talented roster,” commented Coach Shiver, “not only do we have players with valuable experience, we have rookies that bring extraordinary athletic abilities to the field.”

An expansion franchise in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), the Montgomery Maulers offer seven nights of hard-hitting, high-scoring, “edge of your seat” excitement at historic Garrett Coliseum. The Maulers play their first-ever home game on Saturday, April 2 against the SW Louisiana Swashbucklers. Season tickets start at $49 and are available by calling (334) 277-1881, visiting the Maulers’ office at Eastdale Mall, or logging on to www.montgomerymaulers.com.
