Mauer Named Player of the Month

New York, NY— The Chase Bank has named New Britain Rock Cats catcher Joe Mauer as the Eastern League's Chase Most Valuable Player for the month of July. The 6'4", 220 lb. Fort Myers, Florida native had an excellent month for the Rock Cats, hitting .402 with 11 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 17 runs scored, 14 RBI, five walks, a .431 on-base percentage and a .588 slugging percentage in 27 games. The 20-year old is currently hitting .360 with 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 28 RBI and 29 runs scored in 46 games since making his Double-A debut with the Rock Cats on June 16th. Mauer had a hit in 21 of the 27 games he played in during the month, raising his batting average from .302 at the start of the month to .364 through July 31st. Joe was selected by the Minnesota Twins as the first overall pick in the first round of the June 2001 draft after excelling in baseball, basketball and football at Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mauer will receive his award later this month in an on-field presentation at New Britain Stadium in New Britain, Connecticut and he will also be recognized at the Chase MVP Awards banquet when the season ending award winners are announced.

Now in its seventh season, the Chase Awards Program is designed to recognize the monthly achievements and season long accomplishments of Eastern League players. Chase and the Eastern League will name a monthly most valuable player throughout the season, as well as a season ending Chase Eastern League MVP. In addition, Chase will select a Chase Pitcher of the Year, Chase Rookie of the Year and a Chase Manager of the Year at the end of the season. All award winners are chosen by Eastern League sports writers and radio announcers and will be recognized at a season ending awards banquet.
