Vancouver Stealth News Release
Vancouver, BC - The Vancouver Stealth announced today that Matt Beers has been named team Captain, taking over from Curtis Hodgson who announced his retirement on Monday.
Beers was originally drafted by the Stealth in the 2nd round (13th overall) in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft. He has played all seven seasons of his career with the Stealth organization and was named to the 2010 NLL All-Rookie Team. The Coquitlam, BC-native played junior lacrosse with the Coquitlam Jr. A Adanacs where he was named the BCJALL Defender of the Year in 2010 and was team Captain of the 2010 Coquitlam Minto Cup Championship team. He was drafted 1st overall in the 2011 Western Lacrosse Association Draft by the Burnaby Lakers.
"It is an honour to be named as the next team Captain. Curtis has instilled the values we follow and I will do my best to continue what he achieved moving forward. We have always had a tight room and strong leadership which should make for a smooth transition. I know the boys are hungry to get back on the floor and build off last season," said Beers. "Curtis has been an unbelievable teammate and leader to learn from. He will be greatly missed on and off the floor and I wish him all the best."
As a member of the Stealth he has played in 110 regular season games, scoring 16 goals and 56 assists for 72 points along with 520 loose balls and 122 caused turnovers. In 10 post season games, he has scored 1 goal, 4 assists and 5 points along with 41 loose balls and 6 caused turnovers. Beers won a Champion's Cup with the Stealth in 2010 and participated in two additional Champion's Cup Finals with the Stealth in 2011 and 2013.
"Matt has been a leader since his arrival as a twenty-year-old and possesses all the characteristics we want in our team leader," commented Doug Locker, President and General Manager. "Matt not only is one of the league's best defenders but is also passionate about the Stealth, his teammates and the growth of lacrosse here in British Columbia."
