Storylines
Back to It: International duty concluded after the USWNT claimed the CONCAAF championship Monday, July 18, thanks to the Chicago Red Stars' Alyssa Naeher and Mallory Pugh, and the Wave's Alex Morgan, Naomi Girma and Taylor Kornieck. The United States won 1-0 against Canada, where the Red Stars' Bianca St-Georges and the Wave's Kailen Sheridan represented the Canadian National Team. The team will also have Chelsie Dawber back after her time with Australia's Youth National team.
Making an Impact: Samantha Fisher scored her first career goal last game against the Dash. Fisher is the fourth player under 24 years old to score for Chicago this season (Amanda Kowalski, Sarah Griffith and Ava Cook) with the Red Stars joining Portland for the most such goal scorers this season.
A Battle for the Top of the Table: The Red Stars and Wave occupied the top two spots in the NWSL standings for a majority of the first half of the season. Now the two teams will face off for the second time this where a positive result for the Red Stars could see the two teams swap positions on the NWSL table. Leading the two teams, Mallory Pugh and Alex Morgan will have their own battle during the match as the two USWNT stars jockey for the league's golden boot award. Morgan currently leads the league in goals with 11, but Pugh is not far behind with six goals of her own for the Red Stars.
A Chance at Redemption: The Red Stars amassed a nine-game unbeaten streak from the May 22 win over the Orlando Pride to the July 15 loss against the Houston Dash. Before the Dash, the Red Stars' last loss was against the Wave May 15 in their first match in the Wave's inaugural season. With the Red Stars currently sitting in the 3rd spot in the NWSL standings, a win against the Wave will secure the first-place spot.
