New York Lizards News Release

The Long Island Lizards (7-3) defeated the New Jersey Pride (6-4), 13-10, in front of 2,241 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark in Somerset, NJ. The Lizards led the entire game, as the Pride cut the lead to one goal on four different occassions, but was unable to ever tie the game. Chris Massey was named Bud Light MVP, as he led the Lizards with four goals against his former team. Kevin Lowe, Tim Goettelmann, Kevin Finneran and Jay Jalbert all scored two goals en route to the victory, with Lowe scoring the game- winner.

Long Island jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, with goals from Kevin Lowe and Tim Goettelmann, but New Jersey tied it up with goals from David Curry and Jesse Hubbard. Kevin Finneran scored to end a seven minute scoring drought, and Greg McCavera followed it up to give Long Island a 4-2 lead. With five seconds remaining in the first quarter, Tim Goettelmann scored his second goal of the period to give Long Island a commanding 5-2 lead after one.

Jalbert scored 10 seconds into the second quarter, sprinting upfield after a Chris Cercy faceoff win and putting the ball past Tierney. Scott Urick finally beat Dougherty, but Chris Massey answered right back, diving through the crease and putting Long Island up 7-3. Scott Urick scored, followed by a goal from Jesse Hubbard to cut the lead to 7-5, but Jay Jalbert scored his second goal of the game to put the Lizards up 8-5 at the half.

The New Jersey defense buckled down in the third quarter, holding the Lizards scoreless for 18 minutes. Jesse Hubbard scored through the five- hole on the fast break, and Austin Garrison rocketed the ball into the corner of the net to cut the lead to 8-7. However, Chris Massey ended the scoring drought with two straight goals, with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter, and again with only one second left on the clock, putting the Lizards up 10-7 with one quarter left to play.

Hubbard cut the lead to 10-9, starting the fourth quarter with two straight goals. However, Long Island came back with three straight to put the Pride away. Kevin Lowe scored on the edge of the crease off of a perfect Greg McCavera pass, and Kevin Finneran followed it up with a wormburner. Chris Massey scored his fourth goal of the game, picking up a rebound off of Tierney and putting Long Island up 13-9. Peter Jacobs scored a fast break goal to make the score 13-10, but Long Island was able to run out the clock and hold on for the victory.

The Lizards improve to 7-3 with the victory, and are now the top team in Major League Lacrosse. Long Island can clinch their third consecutive American Division Championship if the Baltimore Bayhawks (6-3) defeat the Boston Cannons (5-4) tonight. New Jersey falls to 6-4. The two teams meet again next Sunday, August 10th at Mitchel Field. Faceoff is slated for 6:00 PM. The Lizards are 9-0 all-time in games involved in a back-to-back series.
