MASL Major Arena Soccer League

MASL Weekly - Week 6

December 3, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release

Chicago, Baltimore Score Impressive Wins

12/3/14 - The Baltimore Blast maintained their impregnable defense and the Chicago Mustangs got a lift from a resurgent Jesus Flores.

The Blast visited the Syracuse Silver Knights and held them to just two goals. After setting an indoor soccer record for goals against average last year, the Blast have been even stingier this year allowing just five goals in four games. Lucas Roque broke a tie in the third quarter and the Blast buried the dagger with two empty net goals.

The Mustangs, smarting from losses to the Missouri Comets and St. Louis Ambush hosted the Milwaukee Wave and came away with a signature 5-4 win. Chicago, who bolstered their lineup with the signing of Hewerton, led 5-2 in the third quarter and then absorbed a sustained attack by the Wave.

Goalkeeper Jesus Flores, who struggled the first three games after going 16-0 and playing every minute of the Mustangs season last year, returned to form and stymied Milwaukee with help from his buzzing defenders.

MASL Team of the Week

GK - Jesus Flores, Chicago Mustangs - Flores, last year's Aaron Susi Trophy winner as the playoff MVP, withstood a steady torrent of shots from the Milwaukee Wave, but closed out a 5-4 home victory.

D - Pat Healey, Baltimore Blast - Healey makes his second appearance on the Team of the Week after leading Baltimore to their fourth straight win. Healey helped hold Syracuse to two goals, while contributing two assists to his own team's offensive cause.

D - Guilherme Veiga, Chicago Mustangs - The Brazilian defender is the team captain and steadying force of the high-flying Mustangs. Veiga led a hard-working defensive effort in front of Jesus Flores in the win against the Wave.

F - Lourenco Andrade, Monterrey Flash - Andrade leads the Flash in scoring a third of the way through the season and is second in the MASL with 20 points. In two wins this weekend Andrade racked up six goals and three assists.

F - Matt Clare, Wichita B-52s - Clare was a late addition for Wichita this year, but they were able to convince him to return for a third season. In Wichita's 8-4 road win at the Tulsa Revolution, Clare popped off for three goals and two assists.

F - Joey Tavernese, Rochester Lancers - Tavernese is a native New Yorker, but from far off Garden City. In his third season Joey is becoming a featured player for the Lancers. He is tied for the team lead with 10 points after his two goals and two assists propelled the team to a win over Detroit Saturday. Tavernese has been a particular thorn in the Waza Flo with eight points in their two meetings.

Guille, Thanks!

Guillermo Franco, the former Mexican national and EPL player has agreed to remain with the Monterrey Flash for the rest of the season. Franco, who also had a successful turn with Rayados in Monterrey, has meshed with the club and has eight points in three games this season, his first indoors.

Bontti Scores

Flash goalkeeper Jose Bontti caught the Brownsville Barracudas by surprise by dribbling over his yellow line and launching a low, rising rocket that clipped in under the crossbar from 150 feet. The goal, just before the end of the first half, gave Monterrey an 8-1 lead.

Speaking of Rockets...

The Wichita B-52s have brought back The Rocket Kim Roentved as the team's new Head Coach. The team parted ways with coach Jeff Kraft after a 1-4 start and interim coach Darin Smith went 1-0. Roentved played for and coached the Wichita Wings for many years and recently returned as Director of Player Development. Smith will stay on as assistant coach.
