MASL Weekly - Week 3
November 12, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release
Comets Undisputed Arena Champions--for Now
11/12/14 - The Missouri Comets are still searching for their first Newman Cup title and the Chicago Mustangs are still the defending Newman Cup champions, but the Comets, who won the final MISL championship in March, have the next best thing: bragging rights.
The Comets have now beaten the Dallas Sidekicks and Mustangs with startling ease after Saturday's 12-6 win at the Sears Centre in Chicago.
Leo Gibson and Vahid Assadpour again did most of the damage combining for five goals and two assists. The duo are first and second in the MASL in scoring.
Missouri has now spoiled the Sidekicks 16-game home winning streak and put an end to the Mustangs 16 game overall winning streak. The Comets will face another stiff test when they open their home schedule on Saturday against the Milwaukee Wave in a game that has been sold out for weeks.
Team of the Week
GK - Jose Bontti, Monterrey Flash - Bontti had a big weekend with road wins in Ontario and Las Vegas to improve to 3-0 since reuniting with the Flash. After a 7-5 win Friday, Bontti held the Las Vegas Legends to just two goals in a 3-2 win Sunday. Las Vegas score five or more goals in every game last season.
D - Jonathan Greenfield, Milwaukee Wave - The veteran defender from South Africa was singled out by Wave coach Giuliano Oliviero as the player of the game in Milwaukee's 8-4 win over the St. Louis Ambush.
D - Pat Healey, Baltimore Blast - The Blast opened their season with a 16-7 win over the Syracuse Silver Knights. Healey, who recently made appearances with the US National Arena Soccer Team, was a key defensive contributor in holding Syracuse to three goals in the game and holding them scoreless in the second half.
F - Mauricio Salles, Rochester Lancers - The tall Lancers forward opened the season with four goals against the Detroit Waza Flo. His first two gave Rochester a 2-0 lead, then after Detroit rallied from four goals down to tie it he scored to give his team an 8-7 lead. After Victor Otieno tied the game again with 52 seconds remaining, Salles put the Lancers on his shoulders and scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a one-timer that came to him off a bad clear.
M - Kevin Ten Eyck, Wichita B-52s - The B-52s didn't get to enjoy their local hero last year as Ten Eyck tore his ACL in the first game of the season. Now back on the floor Ten Eyck treated the Wichita faithful to a four goal game in a home-opening 12-6 win over the Tulsa Revolution.
M - Vahid Assadpour, Missouri Comets - Assadpour had two goals and an assist in the first half Saturday as the Comets built a 6-1 halftime lead against Chicago. He added an assist in the second half for a game-high four points.

Perera Makes an Impact
Nick Perera's return to the Sockers has given them a jolt in their first two games. Perera torched the Seattle Impact for four goals and two assists in a 14-4 win at the ShoWare Center Saturday. The Sockers improved to 2-0 and Perera leads the team with nine points.
