MASL Weekly - Week 2
Published on November 5, 2014 under Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release
The San Diego Sockers have little time to get comfortable in this new MASL season because three of their first five games are against the Las Vegas Legends. San Diego, however, was able to hold serve with a season opening 5-4 overtime win against the Legends at the Valley View Casino Center.
With the loss of leading scorer Enrique Tovar and the hiring of new coach Doug Borgel, the Legends are a much more defensive team through two games and an exhibition game against the Mexican National Futbol Rapido team. Las Vegas took a 4-2 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but could not hold on as Eduardo Velez and Brian Farber finally broke through to tie the game and Kraig Chiles scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
The Sockers almost won the game in regulation time, but Brian Farber hit the post on the Hail Mary play in the video below.
Brian Farber just misses game-winning goal as regulation time ticked to zero.
Team of the Week
GK - Zeke Sanchez, Las Vegas Legends - Sanchez split two games, but was stellar in a 7-6 SO win over the Turlock Express and in a 5-4 OT loss to San Diego. He logged 133:57 in the two games.
D - Cesar Cerda, Saltillo Rancho Seco - The second year defender had three goals and three assists, albeit in a losing 12-11 effort against the Brownsville Barracudas. Cerda has scored or assisted on 36% of Saltillo's 102 goals including last season.
D - Costea Decu, Detroit Waza Flo - The veteran high-scoring defender reclaimed the title of Head Coach this offseason and led Detroit to an 8-4 win over the Harrisburg Heat in their home opener Saturday. Decu, still getting it done at 43, had two goals and an assist.
F - Leo Gibson, Missouri Comets - The Liberian, in his fifth year with the Comets, exploded on opening night for four goals and three assists against the Dallas Sidekicks and currently leads the MASL in points.
F - Guillermo Franco, Monterrey Flash - Franco, who has played for the Mexican National Team and in the English Premier League has joined the Flash on a trial basis. In his first indoor game he inspired the fanbase with three goals and an assist against Brownsville.
M - Vahid Assadpour, Missouri Comets - Assadpour had three goals and two assists against Dallas on October 25. Vahid and Gibson totaled seven goals and five assists, but only actually teamed up for two of the Comets 13 goals.
