Legends, Mustangs Strike Back
1/7/15 - Heading into the 2015 portion of the 2014/15 season, the Las Vegas Legends and Chicago Mustangs bring momentum into the new year.
Las Vegas staggered out to a 2-5 start despite going 13-3 last year and Chicago stumbled to a 2-4 start after running the table last season. This season their struggles and success have run parallel and both teams are now riding five game winning streaks.
With the San Diego Sockers losing two of their last three, the Legends are just a game out of first in the Pacific Division after a 7-5 win over Turlock and an 11-8 road win in Ontario.
Chicago won't be putting any heat on the undefeated Missouri Comets for the Central Division lead, but the Mustangs have climbed into second place. The Mustangs travel to third place Milwaukee (7-5) on Saturday.
MASL Team of the Week
GK - Juan Gamboa, Oxford City FC of Texas - Gamboa shut down the Sidekicks for the second time this season, but more impressively handed Dallas just their second regular season home loss in three years. The 5-4 win was Gamboa's first since leaving Hidalgo and signing with Oxford City.
D - Evan McNeley, San Diego Sockers - The Sockers burly defender had a season-high two goals and two assists in a blowout 18-5 win over the Sacramento Surge and kept Sacramento in relative check in a freewheeling game.
D - Eric Guzman, Las Vegas Legends - The local prodigy helped Las Vegas extend their winning streak to five games with a combined two goals and three assists in two wins last week. Guzman is in his third season with the Legends, despite just turning 21 in August.
F - Hewerton Moreira, Chicago Mustangs - Known to most of the indoor soccer world as simply Hewerton (pronounced Everton), the veteran forward was a midseason signing for the Mustangs who is paying big dividends. With reigning league MVP Wilo Martinez struggling, Hewerton has picked up the mantle of Flipper in Chief to the tune of seven goals and two assists his last two games. F - Ivan Campos, Las Vegas Legends - With the offseason losses of Enrique Tovar and Alex Caceres, the bulk of the Legends offense depends on Campos. Rising to the challenge Campos had three goals and five assists in two wins last week.
F - Kraig Chiles, San Diego Sockers - Chiles scored five goals (or more) for the 11th time and added an assist in San Diego's win over San Diego. His first quarter goal extended his point streak to 55 consecutive regular season games.

Comets Stay Undefeated With Unlikely Win
The Missouri Comets improved to 11-0 with a breathtaking win at Milwaukee and an 8-5 win in St. Louis. The Comets blew leads of 6-2 and 7-6 in Milwaukee and allowed the Wave to tie the game on a goal with two-tenths of a second remaining in regulation. The Wave were poised for victory on a Bato Radoncic shot from midfield with less than five seconds remaining in overtime that caught Danny Waltman wandering, but John Sosa committed an intentional handball that prevented the goal. The Wave were unsuccessful on the penalty shootout and lost the overtime shootout, 2-1.
Sleepless Return from Seattle
The Wichita B-52s stomped the Seattle Impact 12-4 and 10-5 on Saturday and Sunday, but the hard part was getting home. The team got snowed in at their connection in Denver and ended up getting back into Wichita around 24 hours later than scheduled.
Two Long Droughts Drag On
The Harrisburg Heat and Rancho Seco (Dry Ranch) Saltillo continue to be stuck in an arid wasteland. The Heat lost by 10 goals to Baltimore to fall to 0-8, their 13th straight loss dating to last season. Saltillo lost to 2-9 Brownsville for the second time to fall to 0-8, their 10th straight loss overall.
