Marshals Rally Late to Beat Pump Jacks 7-4
The Texas Marshals scored four runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the East Texas Pump Jacks by a final score of 7-4 on Wednesday night in Kilgore. It was a crucial win for the Marshals as they now trail the Pump Jacks by just two games in the overall TCL standings for the fourth and final playoff spot with eight games remaining on the schedule.
Headed to the top of the ninth inning, the Pump Jacks led 4-3 and sent their closer Robbie Petty into the game to try to preserve the win. James Stroud singled and stole second base before Daniel Rushing laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and third with no outs. After a strikeout by Alex Gosser, Spencer Goodwin laced a single to right field to score Stroud and tie the game up at 4-4. James Sloan walked before Carson Shaddy grounded into an RBI fielder's choice to score Rushing and give the Marshals a 5-4 lead. Chase Daughdrill then hit a two-run single back up the middle to score Sloan and Shaddy and put the Marshals on top 7-4.
Kevin Williams got his first start on the mound for the Marshals this season and tossed four innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Jake Smith tossed two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and stuck out one. Dan Hawk made his first appearance of the season for the Marshals and pitched a three-up, three-down seventh inning. Collin Sherrod got the win as the threw the final two scoreless innings and allowed just two hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Marshals scored first in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Stroud that scored Daughdrill. The Pump Jacks took a 2-1 lead with two runs in the third. The Marshals then tied the game in the fifth inning at 2-2 on an RBI groundout by Spencer Goodwin.
The Pump Jacks quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs to go up 4-2. The Marshals cut their lead to 4-3 in the seventh on an RBI single by Sloan to score Rushing.
The score remained 4-3 until the Marshals made their comeback to win the game in the ninth inning.
With the win, the Marshals improve to 17-32 overall and 9-13 in the second-half. The Pump Jacks are now 19-30 overall and 10-11 in the second-half.
The Marshals still have four games remaining on their six-game road trip. Next up is a trip to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on the Acadiana Cane Cutters on Thursday and Friday nights at Fabacher Field in a two-game series. The Marshals will then wrap up their road trip with two games in The Woodlands against the Strykers on Saturday and Sunday.
