Mariners Sweep Doubleheader & Series against Danville
August 19, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski Mariners News Release
The Pulaski Mariners (32-25) reasserted themselves in the middle of the Appalachian League playoff hunt with a doubleheader sweep of the Danville Braves (33-25). The couple of wins on Tuesday capped off a three-game series sweep which brings the Mariners within half a game of the Divisional lead.
Daniel Missaki (5-2, 2.39 ERA) started on the hill for game one. Missaki was in full control and went the full seven innings-his first career complete game. Danville scratched one run against Missaki and was limited to five hits and one walk. Additionally, Missaki fanned six Braves.
Pulaski scored twice in the first inning due in part to run scoring hits by Jay Baum and Wayne Taylor. The Mariners would pad their lead in the third inning with a double off the bat of Estarlyn Morales. The game would end 3-1.
The offenses of both sides were the focus of the second contest as Pulaski won 8-5.
Pat Peterson (2-1, 3.27 ERA) started for manager Rob Mummau. Peterson kept the opposition in check-he threw six innings of shutout ball. Peterson allowed only two hits and struck out 10 batters which set a new career high for him.
The Mariners spread their scoring onslaught throughout the game and their own lineup. Pulaski scored in four of the seven innings, and six starters recorded at least one run batted in. Taylor drove in three runs and scored once himself in a two-for-three outing. Morales also went two-for-three and scored twice.
Everything nearly came undone for the Mariners in the bottom of the seventh. Rigoberto Garcia (0-2, 18.97 ERA) started off the inning but immediately faltered. Garcia could record only one out as he surrendered five runs on four hits and one walk.
Daniel Thieben (2-1, 3.54 ERA) got the second out of the inning, but he walked two Braves. With the game hanging in the balance, Mummau elected to use his closer, Peter Miller (2-1, 1.48 ERA), to put Danville to rest. Miller did his job and ended the game for his seventh save of the year.
