Pulaski Mariners News Release
Pulaski, VA (July 7, 2011) - It was a night of highs and lows for both clubs tonight as the Pulaski Mariners hosted the Bristol White Sox for the finale of their four game series. Both clubs experienced a plethora of offense throughout the game, with 15 runs scored in the game on 22 hits. Bristol was able to score the majority, as they held off a late charge from the Mariners, and won the game 8-7.
Bristol started the game off hot in the first innings batting through their whole lineup. In the White Sox's six run first inning the White Sox had four hits, two of which were doubles by leadoff hitter Jordan Keegan and first baseman Grant Buckner.
The Mariners wasted no time answering back in the bottom of the inning, with Guillermo Pimentel hitting his first of two homeruns on the night. The two RBI homerun brought the score to 6-3 entering the second inning.
Pitching for both teams settled down in the middle of the game. Brett Shankin came on in relief of starting pitcher Mayckol Guaipe and threw three solid innings of work, allowing only three hits.
With the Mariners down 8-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, Guillermo Pimentel stayed red hot at the plate with his second homerun of the night. The two RBI blast (his eight of the season) tightened up the game to 8-6.
With the fans remembering the walk-off magic that happened the night before, the Mariners did all they could to try and spoil the game for the White Sox once again. Down 8-6 with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Dillon Hazlett singled on a ball to third base scoring Jean Acevedo and pulling the game within one run for the Mariners. With two outs and the bases still loaded Efrain Nunez stepped up the plate with a chance to end the game on a walk-off hit for the second consecutive night. After working the count full, Nunez swung and missed on a fastball on the outer half of the plate for strike three, sealing the victory for the Bristol White Sox.
Mayckol Guaipe (3-1) was tagged with the loss for the Mariners after having a tough start. Euclides Leyer (2-1) got the win for the White Sox and Bryan Blough earned his first save of the year.
The Mariners will take the field again tomorrow night as they start their three game series against the Johnson City Cardinals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Historic Calfee Park.
