Orlando City SC News Release
ORLANDO - Orlando City Soccer Club is proud to announce Marcos Machado as the Goalkeepers Coach. The addition of Machado rounds out Head Coach Adrian Heath's staff for the 2011 season.
"It is a great opportunity for me," said Machado. "I've played professional soccer all my life. I am very excited to help bring professional soccer back to Orlando."
Machado's playing career as a goalkeeper began in 1971 in his native Brazil with Sport Recife. In 1973, while with Recife, he was the youngest player in the Brazil's first division. Machado made the move to Europe in 1987 with Rio Ave FC. He came to the United States in 1997 to join the Orlando Sun Dogs, and finished his playing career in 2000 with the Central Florida Kraze.
"Marcos has loads of experience both as a professional and a coach," said Head Coach Adrian Heath. "I'm very impressed with what I've seen him do with the goalkeepers so far. I'm delighted that he's joined the coaching staff."
Since ending his professional career, Machado has been a staple of the Orlando soccer community. He began his coaching career while still playing with the Sun Dogs, the last fully professional team to reside in the City Beautiful acting as a player/coach. In 2004 he was the Goalkeeping Coach for Ajax Orlando, the then-US-based division of Ajax Amsterdam's legendary soccer academy. He is currently the Technical Director for the Florida Rush, one of Central Florida's premier youth soccer programs, and has been the goalkeeping coach for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Florida since 1998.
