Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

BRADENTON -- An early lead for the Charlotte Stone Crabs quickly became trouble with one swing of the bat, as a grand slam off the bat of Mel Rojas, Jr. led the Bradenton Marauders to an 10-3 win at McKechnie Field on Thursday in the first game of the FSL's second half of the season.

Braulio Lara (4-6) was given a 2-0 lead before even taking the mound thanks to a Tyler Waldron (5-3) wild pitch and Derek Dietrich RBI single. Mikie Mahtook tripled in Robby Price in the third inning as well, and Lara found himself ahead early.

Lara, however, struggled with two outs all day, and quickly surrendered the lead. He gave up two runs in the third on an RBI single by Kirk Singer and a ground ball double play from Rojas, Jr.

The fourth inning would provide the real fireworks. Lara got the first two men of the frame out, but a walk to Dan Grovatt and a double by Gift Ngoepe caused the Stone Crabs to intentionally walk the hot-hitting Singer to bring up Rojas, Jr. The Marauders center fielder then blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to put Bradenton up 6-3.

Lara stayed in the game, but a throwing error by Hector Guevara allowed Alex Dickerson to reach second, and that spelled the end of Lara's night. Nate Garcia came on in relief and allowed a run-scoring double to Elevys Gonzalez before ending the inning with Bradenton on top 7-3.

The Marauders added a run in the fifth against Garcia on a single by Kirk Singer, his third hit of the day. Another two runs in the eighth against position player Steve Tinoco on the mound for Charlotte finished the night's scoring.

Friday two teams will head to Charlotte Sports Park for the final two games of the series. Charlotte will give the ball to FSL All-Star lefty C.J. Riefenhauser (6-2), who will match up with right-hander Matt Benedict (0-0). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
