
Mammoth Take Down Rock

(Denver, Colorado) â Friday January 3, 2002 â The game, the name and evening proved to be huge in many aspects for both teams and the National Lacrosse League. A crowd of 16,121 cheered on the hometown Mammoth as they defeated the Rock by a score of 13-12. Brian Langley scored his third goal of the game in the second overtime.
Rookie Aaron Wilson opened the scoring for the Rock 1:49 into the game to put the Rock on the board first. Blaine Manning added to the Rock lead at 4:24 to advance the visiting team to a two-goal lead that silenced the home crowd.
After a dismal first quarter with only two goals, both teams decided to turn it up a notch combining for 9-goals in the second quarter. The Mammoth's first official goal came at 1:35 into the second quarter as the hometown team erupted after Gary Gait's first foal of the season. Gait added his second of the game to tie the game at two but Rock captain Jim Veltman scored his first of the game to advance the Rock 3-2. Ted Dowling and Steve Toll added 2-goals each before the quarter ended. The Rock led at the half 6-5.
Determined to please their hometown fans the Mammoth came out on fire outscoring the Rock 5-3 in the third quarter. All five goals from Colorado came from different players, while Toll added his third of the game. But it wasn't enough as the Mammoth took their first lead of the game 10-9 at the end of the third.
Again, captain Jim Veltman came to the rescuing opening the scoring in the fourth quarter tying the game at 10. But Mammoth captain answered the call putting his team up by a goal with seven minutes to play. Steve Toll added his fourth of the game on a breakaway pass from Pat Coyle to even the score at eleven goals each. Toll wasn't finished scoring his fifth if to move the Rock ahead one. But the Ted Dowling scored his fourth and his sixth point to even the game at 12 and send the game to overtime.
After a series of chances for both teams, but not one team could capitalize on their chances sending the game into double overtime. Steve Toll finished the game with 5-goals, Jim Veltman had two âgoals and three assists, doyle and Manning added 1 goal and three helpers each.
