
Mammoth Stomp On Wings in 13-12 Win

DENVER, CO - The Philadelphia Wings lost a tightly fought 13-12 battle with the league-leading Colorado Mammoth in front of 17,385 fans at the Pepsi Center. The Wings (4-7), who have lost four straight games, look to return to their winning ways at the Wachovia Center next Saturday, March 13 when they face the Toronto Rock at 8 p.m.
"This game shows that we can play with the best team in the NLL," said Head Coach Adam Mueller. "While the outcome wasn't what we were hoping for, we played with this team consistently for four quarters."
A closely fought first quarter only saw one goal from each team. The Wings Tom Marechek opened up the game scoring at 9:46 in the first followed by a power play goal by the Mammoth's Brian Langtry. Mammoth goaltender Gee Nash deflected 16 shots in the first quarter while the Wings' Dallas Eliuk turned back nine.
Colorado came out strong in the second quarter scoring three straight goals within 1:10 of play. The Wings got their first score of the quarter when Jeff Ratcliffe scored on a power play goal at 4:17. Gary Gait scored for the Mammoth to put his team up by three again., but the Wings Marechek and Dan Marohl each scored one to bring the Wings within one at the half. The Wings' Eliuk recorded 25 saves in the first half while the Mammoth's Nash had 23.
Prout scored his second of the night to put his team up by two at the start of the third. Then the Wings took their first lead of the game with four straight goals by Ratcliffe, Pete Jacobs, and two by Jake Bergey. Prout struck again for the Mammoth at 8:27 to pull his game within one then tied it at eight goals apiece when Curtis Smith scored at 11:04. Ratcliffe put the Wings back in the lead with a hat-trick , but Colorado tied it up again just :28 later when Del Halladay scored his first of the night. The Mammoth regained the lead when Smith scored his second of the night with just :40 to go in the third quarter.
Jamie Hanford put the Mammoth up by two just :12 into the fourth quarter. Marechek scored his hat-trick on a power play goal to put the Wings within one again. Spencer Martin tied the game for the Wings at eleven when he scored on a short-handed goal at 7:04. John Gallant put the Mammoth in the lead again when he scored at 8:36 but the Wings tied it again when Bergey scored his hat-trick goal on a power play at 12:20. But it was Prout who scored the game-winner for the Mammoth with his goal at 13:13 to give his team the 13-12 win.
Jake Bergey, Tom Marechek, and Jeff Ratcliffe all recorded hat-tricks for the Wings this afternoon. Pete Jacobs, Spencer Martin, and Dan Marohl, all recorded one goal each. Goaltender Dallas Eliuk finished the night with 41 saves including his 5,000th career NLL save.
Gavin Prout was the lead goal scorer for the Mammoth with three while goaltender Gee Nash recorded 47 saves.
NOTES: The Philadelphia Wings go "Old School" on and off the turf when they face the Toronto Rock on March 13 at 8 p.m. at the Wachovia Center with a special appearance from Blue from the movie "Old School" and a 30th Anniversary Tribute to the 1974 team.
