Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) today announced the organization has signed defenseman Joey Cupido to a one-year contract agreement, set to begin during the 2023-24 NLL campaign.
Recording two points (0g, 2a), 18 loose balls, two caused turnovers, one blocked shot and two penalty minutes in six games played during the 2022-23 NLL campaign, Cupido suffered a lower-body injury during a Feb. 3 matchup with the Georgia Swarm, bringing his season to a halt. Eventually moved to the team's Injured Reserve List before making his way to the Season-Ending Injured Reserve List, the Mammoth alternate captain was forced to miss the remainder of the season.
A force to be reckoned with both on the back end and in the transition game, Cupido has played an integral role in helping the organization return to its current championship-caliber state. After logging 10 points (6g, 4a), 84 loose balls, 21 caused turnovers, six blocked shots and four penalty minutes in 14 regular season appearances during Colorado's 2021-22 NLL Championship season, "Lightning" added a much-welcomed seven points (4g, 3a), 37 loose balls, eight caused turnovers, three blocked shots and eight penalty minutes during the team's successful postseason run.
Originally selected by the Mammoth in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft (fifth round, 38th overall), the defenseman has racked up 157 points (71g, 86a), 871 loose balls, 203 caused turnovers and 68 penalty minutes in 154 regular season appearances. Unafraid to lay it all on the line during the postseason, the Hamilton, Ontario native has accumulated 16 points (11g, 5a), 93 loose balls, 20 caused turnovers and six penalty minutes in 17 playoff matchups throughout this decorated NLL career.
Effectively getting the Loud House rocking each time he steps foot inside Ball Arena, Cupido ranks among the organization's leaders in several statistical categories, including games played (second), loose balls (second) and caused turnovers (first) as he prepares to return for his 12th season this fall.
