Mallards Felled by Lumberjacks
April 3, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MUSKEGON, Mich.- Brian Bicek scored two goals and added one assist as the host Muskegon Lumberjacks scored five times in the second period Saturday night on the way to a 5-2 win over the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Just 42 seconds into the second period Damien Surma's solo rush triggered Muskegon's goal rush and tied the score at one. Midway through the period Bicek struck for two goals in just 34 seconds. Bicek's wrist shot from the left wing circle gave the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead at 9:59 of the second. At 10:33 Bicek buried the puck from the doorstep to stretch the margin to two goals. Matt Roberston extended the Muskegon lead to 4-1 by jamming in a rebound at 13:18. The Mallards' woes were compounded when Billy Collins converted Surma's centering feed for a shorthanded goal at the 16:51 mark.
The Mallards turned a tricky hop into their second power play goal of the game when the puck bounced off Muskegon goaltender Sebasten Centomo behind the Lumberjack goal and caromed to Juris Stals who drove it into the empty net from the slot at 2:40 of the third period. While Stals's goal halted Muskegon's run of five straight goals, it would not affect the final outcome
It was the Mallards who had first jumped in front with a power play goal at the 4:06 mark of the first period from Chris Lipsett, who one timed the puck home from the left wing circle.
The Mallards return to action Wednesday night in Dayton against the Gems. The Mallards are next in action on home ice next Thursday night, April 8, against the Bloomington PrairieThunder at 7:05 P.M.
