Mallards Cruise to 4-1 Victory Over Battle Creek

Published on August 7, 2011 under Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) News Release

MADISON, WI- On a Sunday afternoon that looked to be a wash early on in the day the Mallards took the field to face the Battle Creek Bombers for the last time this season at Warner Park. In front of a crowd of 6,451 the Mallards took charge early on and never looked back as they cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Bombers.

The Mallards are currently in fourth place posting an overall record of (35-27), and (14-13) in the second half leaving them three games back of the first place Green Bay Bullfrogs and La Crosse Loggers.

The Bombers dropped by the "Duck Pond" for a quick one game series before the Mallards head to Michigan to end the regular season in a two game set vs. Battle Creek. The Mallards made the first move in the bottom of the second when outfielder and All-Star Jordan Owen (Tennessee-Martin) hit a solo shot deep into left field (sixth) giving the Mallards a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for the Mallards to add more runs.

In the bottom of the third with two outs, the Mallards put on the press and successfully completed a double steal scoring Tyler Jones (Long Island). Then in the bottom of the fifth Mike McQuillan (Iowa) went yard as well giving the Mallards a 3-1 lead.

It took a bit before the Bombers got things moving and in the top of the sixth with two outs they managed to squeak out a run on a flair to left just out of reach of a diving Andrew Wasmund (Madison College).

The Bombers success was short due to a lights out performance from Mallards pitcher Tom Windle(Minnesota) as took the mound for the Mallards looking to improve on his previous start. Windle accomplished his goal by throwing a solid 7.2 innings, striking out six, allowing five hits, giving up only one run and giving the Mallards their best performance by a starter to date.

Wasmund made up for his failed diving attempt by keeping the long ball theme alive at the "Duck Pond" as he belted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixthgiving back the Mallards the run that they lost just an inning before.

This would be the last batter Bomber starter Michael Caley (Indiana Wesleyan) would face as he lasted 6.1 innings, allowing four runs off of five hit. His replacement Kevin Schultz (Grand Valley State) held off the Mallards offence for the rest of the game by allowing no hits and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.

Dan Tobik (Tennessee-Martin) came in to relieve Windle and continued the dominating pitching performance for the Mallards, as he allowed no hits while putting down all four batters he faced in a row. In the process he picked up his first save of the year.

The Mallards hit the road for a three game trip taking them to Eau Claire to face the Express for two games at Carson Park. Then to Wausau to face the Wisconsin Woodchucks for the first game in a three game series before heading back to the "Duck Pond" to warp up the series and the home regular season schedule.
