Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee Announces Fines and Suspensions

Published on October 29, 2008 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK (Oct. 29, 2008) - The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee today fined New England Revolution midfielder Khano Smith $1,000 and suspended him two additional games. The Committee also fined Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol $1,000.

Smith was shown a red card for serious foul play after a tackle on Kansas City Wizards forward Herculez Gomez in the 42nd minute of the Revolution's 3-1 loss on Oct. 25, 2008. The Committee found that Smith made an egregious challenge that endangered the safety of his opponent. This fine and suspension are in addition to the automatic one-game suspension and $250 fine for the red card totaling a three-game suspension and a $1,250 fine.

Smith will begin serving the suspension with the first leg of the Revolution's Conference Semifinal versus the Chicago Fire tomorrow night and will miss the second leg of the Conference Semifinal on Nov. 6. If the Revolution do not advance to the Conference Championship, Smith will miss the opening game of the 2009 Regular Season.

Nicol has been fined $1,000 for public criticism of Major League Soccer. His comments of a critical nature appeared in the Boston Globe on Oct. 26, following the Revolution's match versus the Kansas City Wizards the previous night.

As one of the League's official Charities of Choice, the US Soccer Foundation is the recipient of all player fines at the end of each season. Those fines are added to the Foundation's Annual Grants Pool from which the Board of Directors awards grants to soccer clubs and organizations that serve economically disadvantaged children in urban areas.
