Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - In the first of three games in three days this weekend, the Lewiston MAINEiacs passed their first test in Quebec City. Etienne Brodeur netted a pair of goals, and Nicholas Champion made 34 saves, as Lewiston picked up a dramatic 4-3 win in front of 10,202 fans at Colisee Pepsi.

The MAINEiacs benefited from a couple of fortunate bounces in the opening period, and had a 2-0 lead to show for them. At the 4:34 mark, Etienne Brodeur carried the puck to the goal line on the left side of the ice, before tossing a shot toward the net. The puck deflected off of goaltender Jimmy Appleby and in for Brodeur's 22nd tally of the season. Just over four minutes later, fellow Varennes, QC native Sam Carrier matched Brodeur, as his shot from the top of the right circle got deflected in off of a Quebec player's skate.

Early in the second period, the Remparts cut the Lewiston lead in half. Ryan Bourque put a shot on goal that Nicholas Champion stopped, and thought he covered. However, Frederick Roy continued to battle, eventually knocking the puck in for a power play goal.

The MAINEiacs didn't let that goal rattle them, scoring just over three minutes later. Francis Beauvillier stole the puck at the top of the left circle, and went in on goal. His shot was stopped, but Louis Domingue was helpless on Kirill Kabanov's rebound opportunity, which regained Lewiston's two-goal edge. Midway through the period, the MAINEiacs added to their lead, when Etienne Brodeur picked the top corner on the power play for his second goal of the evening.

In the third period, Quebec made things interesting, scoring twice in 32 seconds. Ryan Bourque found space between Champion's legs at the 6:23 mark, before Mirko Hoefflin grabbed a rebound and lifted a shot over the sprawling netminder, making the score 4-3.

At that point, Champion and the MAINEiacs took control, as the visitors held on for a 4-3 victory. Lewiston's 20-year old goalie was spectacular at the end of the game, finishing with 34 saves on 37 shots for his league-leading 15th win of the season. Jimmy Appleby allowed two goals on six shots, before being replaced by Louis Domingue, who stopped 20 of 22 shots in relief. Domingue was the goaltender of record, suffering his fourth defeat of the season.

The MAINEiacs will continue their road trip in Shawinigan on Saturday at 4:00, before finishing back in Quebec at 3:00 on Sunday. Lewiston returns home to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Wednesday at 7:00, when the Chicoutimi Sagueneens come to town.
