Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs and PEI Rocket began their two-game weekend series on Friday night, with an exciting battle at the Charlottetown Civic Centre. After falling behind 3-1, Lewiston battled back, eventually scoring the tying goal with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the MAINEiacs, the Rocket picked up the shootout win, scoring twice on their final two shots for the 4-3 victory.
The Rocket started the scoring early in the first period with a power play goal. Ben Duffy drove down into the right face-off circle, before letting a shot go that went into the far side of the net. The MAINEiacs were quick to respond, scoring 3:41 later to even the score. Sam Henley intercepted a pass in the left corner, and then fed the puck into the slot for Cameron Critchlow. Critchlow's first shot was stopped, but he was able to deposit the rebound.
The power play success continued into the second period for PEI, who retook the lead on the man advantage. Andrej Nestrasil took a feed from Samuel Morneau in the right circle, and proceeded to snap a shot into the back of the cage. Later in the period, the home team added another goal, as Morneau dropped a pass off for Olivier Croteau, who scored over Nicholas Champion's glove. The Rocket's two-goal edge didn't last long, as Lewiston needed just 1:04 to net their second goal of the contest. Zach Shannon sent a wrist shot in from the point, and was able to get a deflection from Kirill Kabanov, who tipped in his ninth goal of the season.
The Rocket maintained that lead until the final minute of regulation, when Lewiston knotted things up. Sam Carrier fired a shot toward the net that was knocked in by Kirill Kabanov for the equalizer with 48 seconds left to go.
The game ended up going to a shootout. Kirill Kabanov put the MAINEiacs ahead in the first round, and Lewiston was able to keep that lead until round three. In that round, Samuel Morneau brought PEI even with a tying score. In the fourth round, Felipe Corbo put the Rocket ahead, before Francis Beauvillier came up empty in the visitors' half, as PEI went on to the 4-3 win.
Evan Mosher earned the win for the Rocket, stopping 39 of the 42 shots he faced in the game. Nicholas Champion was saddled with the shootout loss, despite turing away 27 of the 30 shots he faced in the game.
The MAINEiacs will conclude their road trip on Saturday night at 6:00, when they face the PEI Rocket for the second time in as many days. Lewiston's next home game takes place on Friday night at 7:30, when the Gatineau Olympiques visit the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
