Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Lewiston, ME (QMJHL) - The Lewiston MAINEiacs have announced a trade, acquiring defenseman Jonathan Parisien from the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2011 QMJHL Entry Draft. The move is effective immediately.

Parisien, 19, was originally drafted by Baie-Comeau with the 89th overall pick (5th round) in the 2007 QMJHL Entry Draft. The Laval, QC native immediately joined the Drakkar that fall, picking up one assist and 24 penalty minutes in 39 games during his rookie campaign. After scoring three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in his sophomore season, Parisien saw his offensive numbers increase drastically in 2009-10, as he registered four goals, 13 assists, and 17 points in 67 games. Thus far this season, Jonathan has two goals, nine assists, and 11 points in 38 games, giving him career totals of seven goals, 25 assists, 32 points, and 236 penalty minutes in 206 games.

"With the loss of Zachary Evans-Renaud, there was an obvious gap on defense," said MAINEiacs' General Manager Roger Shannon. "We were looking for a big, strong, stay-at-home defenseman, and with the youth of our defense, getting a 19-year old was the way to go. Jonathan Parisien has four solid years of experience in this league, so we feel as though he fits our needs."

While his offensive numbers are respectable from the blueline, Parisien's main role in his career has been as a shutdown defender. The 6-foot-2, 194-pound defender has also been in 12 fights in his career, showing his tough side, while also displaying his knowledge of when to take part in a bout.

"I talked to Jonathan, and he had mixed feelings about the deal, as he had spent his entire junior career in Baie-Comeau," Shannon said. "With that being said, he is very excited, because he is coming to what he refers to as 'a very good team.' He is also excited to live somewhere else, while getting the chance to experience a new culture."

Parisien will look to make his debut in a MAINEiacs' uniform on January 4th, when the team plays host to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
