Maine Freeze Must Play Error Free Football in 2003 Season Debut
April 16, 2003 - National Women's Football Association (NWFA)
Maine Freeze News Release
(PORTLAND, ME) â The Maine Freeze kick off regular season play on the road against the Massachusetts Mutiny Saturday, April 19 at Rocky Marciano Stadium in Brockton, MA.
Saturday's match-up marks the first regular season game for the Freeze and the Mutiny's second. The Mutiny defeated the Rochester Raptors 48-0 in last Saturday's NWFA season opener. The Freeze defeated the Raptors 7-0 during preseason play in March.
The Maine Freeze begins the 2003 season against one of the NWFA's strongest and most disciplined teams. According to Maine Freeze Head Coach Jason McLeod, the Freeze must play error free football in order to win Saturday's game. "The players on the Mutiny will capitalize on any mistake we might make", he says. "I think the vivid memory of three losses against the Mutiny from last year will add some fuel to the fire." Since last season, the Freeze has improved its game on both sides of the ball and added several key rookies to the roster that compliment strong returning players like Jennifer Boudreau (TB), Lori Curtis (OT) and Mariette Harpole (QB).
The Maine Freeze home opener is set for May 3 against the Philadelphia Phoenix at Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium. Portland Mayor James Cloutier is scheduled to toss the game coin and officially welcome the Freeze to Portland. Game time is 7:05p.m. Tickets and season passes can be purchased in advance at www.mainefreeze.com or by calling 207-774-2090 or 1-866-GO-FREEZE.
The Maine Freeze is a fully licensed member of the National Women's Football Association. The NWFA has 30 teams competing for the 2003 Championship. The league has sold 6 licenses for 2004. Additional teams for 2004 include: Shoals SmasHers (AL), Roanoke Revenge (VA), Evansville Express (IN), Denton Stampede (TX), Dallas (TX) & Austin Outlaws (TX).
