Mahomes Wins 3-2 Pitchers Duel

Sioux City, IA - Pat Mahomes and the Sioux Falls Canaries edged Brad Guy and the Sioux City Explorers, 3-2, in a pitcher's duel at Lewis and Clark Park on Tuesday night. The game lasted one hour and forty-eight minutes, an American Association record for the shortest nine-inning game.

The Birds scored first, getting on the board in the second inning. Wil Quintana started the inning with a double. Quintana advanced to third on a groundout by Will Smith and came into score on an infield single by Ben Van Iderstine. Van Iderstine's RBI put the Canaries ahead, 1-0.

The Canaries (19-6) extended the lead in the fourth inning. With two outs, Will Smith singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Ben Van Iderstine followed with a double off the wall in centerfield to score Smith and give the Birds a 2-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Canaries got another run. Tim Marks leadoff single got a runner aboard for the Birds. Angelo Fermin moved Marks to second base with a sacrifice bunt, and James Shanks sent Marks to third with a groundout. With two outs, David Keesee singled home Marks to extend the Canaries lead to three runs, 3-0.

Sioux City (7-18) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mike Richardson singled and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Dustin Jones singled to score Richardson. After five innings the Canaries led 3-1.

The Explorers pulled closer in the seventh inning when Julian Benavidez hit his third homer of the season to get Sioux City within a run, 3-2. After the Benavidez homer, Canaries pitchers retired the next nine batters to close out the one-run victory.

Mahomes (4-0) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out nine. Brad Guy (0-4) was saddled with the loss for the Explorers. Jerrod Fuell pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his ninth save of the season.
