Danbury Mad Hatters News Release

(DANBURY, CT) - The Danbury Mad Hatters of the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL) have announced the signing of forward Igor Karlov, a top prospect from Ukraine. As per club policy, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Karlov is a 23 year old prospect born in Kiev, Ukraine. The 5'10", 175 lb forward played last season for Sokol Kiev Falcons in Vysshaya Liga, a Russian 2 League. In 12 games, he scored 2 goals and added an assist with only 4 penalty minutes. In 2003, he played in 5 games for Team Ukraine in the Division 1 Under 18 World Junior Championships, but did not record a point.

Some of the NHL prospects who have played for Sokol Kiev include former Washington Captials forward Dmitri Khristich, former Buffalo Sabres defenseman Alexei Zhitnik, and current Pittsburgh Penguins forward, and Stanley Cup Champion, Ruslan Fedotenko.

"There's no doubt that he'll be a star in this league," General Manager of Hockey Operations Brendan Tedstone said of Igor. "We're already getting questions from NHL teams about him. He has been off the radar from most all US teams, which helps us tremendously. If we can hold on to him, he'll be a star in the EPHL"

Mad Hatters Head Coach Dave MacIsaac said, "I've seen him play and can tell you that we are lucky to ink this guy. Let's see how long we can hold on to him before the higher leagues call him up."

The Mad Hatters are scheduled to play 50 games this year and will open their inaugural season on November 1 at 7:30 pm at the Danbury Ice Arena against the Rome/Copper City Chiefs.
