Birmingham Barons News Release
Birmingham, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons dropped their series opener against the Mississippi Braves by a score of 3-2 in front of 4,098 fans at Trustmark Park.
The M-Braves scored single runs in the second and third innings including an inside-the-park home run by Gustavo Nunez in the latter to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Barons tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth capped by an RBI triple by Jason Coats against Mississippi starter Jason Hursh.
In his Double-A debut, 2013 First-Round pick Tim Anderson went 3-for-3 including a fifth inning double that nearly scored Trayce Thompson from first base. Instead a relay from right fielder David Rohm to second baseman Barrett Kleinknecht to catcher Matt Kennelly resulted in Thompson being thrown out at the plate, preserving the 2-2 tie.
The Barons would threaten again in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. However J.R Graham was able to induce a foul pop out by Kevan Smith and reliever Ryan Kelly retired Jason Coats on a fly ball to left field to end the inning.
The M-Braves scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Gustavo Nunez led off the inning with a single against reliever Nelvin Fuentes (0-1, 2.25), went to second on a base hit by Cedric Hunter, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by former Baron Seth Loman.
The Barons were unable to mount a final rally in the ninth inning, falling to 58-73 on the season and 29-32 in the second half while Misssissippi improved to 76-54 on the year and 37-24 in the second half.
The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as RHP Mike Recchia (5-4, 3.21) takes the hill against RHP Greg Ross (6-3, 2.20). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CDT.
