Colorado Gold Kings News Release

Colorado Springs, CO -Craig Lyons scored both Colorado goals, including the game-winner 14 seconds into sudden death overtime, as the Gold Kings defeated the Tacoma Sabercats 2-1 in Game Three of the Taylor Cup playoffs Monday night before 3,150 at the World Arena.

Colorado took the lead at 6:40 of the first period, as Lyons' signature slap shot from left point trickled through the five-hole of Sabercats netminder David Goverde. The Gold Kings held the lead for 52:29 and outshot Tacoma 31-13 over the first 40 minutes. Only sensational play by Goverde kept the Sabercats within striking distance, and during a four-on-four situation in the closing moments of the third period, Tacoma head coach Robert Dirk pulled Goverde in favor of the extra attacker. With only 51 seconds left in regulation, Marty Flichel ended Kirk Daubenspeck's shutout bid and forced overtime with a backhander top shelf to tie the score at 1-1.

After Colorado won the face-off to begin overtime, Lyons drove into Tacoma's zone and fired another slap shot from the left point that rippled the net just 14 seconds into the extra period. The Gold Kings, now 2-1 in playoff overtime games, lead the best-of-five series with the Sabercats two games to one and can clinch in Game Four tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at the Colorado Springs World Arena. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
