Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (September 15th) - In a tight and gritty defensive slugfest, the Muskegon Lumberjacks could not find much offense tonight in their USHL Fall Classic East and preseason finale as the Indiana Ice would tally a pair of first period goals and hang on the rest of the way for a 2-1 victory at the Pan Am Pavilion.

The first period would belong to the host Ice as they would notch a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission that began at the 9:38 mark on the power play as Jacob Pritchard would find a fortunate bounce in front of the Lumberjacks net as a shot would deflect off his upper body and into the net that was helped by Austin Kosack and Jake Cass.

Later in the opening frame with 2:23 remaining, Indiana would strike again as Patrick Newell would backhand a shot from the right faceoff circle past Eric Schierhorn's five-hole to double their lead. Pritchard and Cass would get the assists in their second goal of the night. The Ice would slightly outshoot the Lumberjacks through the first twenty minutes, 15-13.

The second period would see no goals being scored as Indiana would grow their shot lead through forty minutes to 26-18. The Lumberjacks would have opportunities to try and cut the deficit down in the middle frame, but would not cash in on three power play opportunities in the period.

The third period would see more solid defense and goaltending as no scoring would be issued until the Lumberjacks would pull Schierhorn for the extra attacker with under a minute to go and cash in with the extra attacker. With 36 seconds to go, Connor Hurley would find a loose rebound on a shot from the left point fired by Chaz Switzer and fire it past Samu Perhonen to cut the deficit in half to 2-1.

However, the Lumberjacks would have no more answers on offense as they would pull Schierhorn again for the extra skater, but come up empty on the scoreboard.

Indiana outshot Muskegon for the game, 35-30, and Eric Schierhorn would make 33 saves for Muskegon in the loss. Samu Perhonen would stop 29 shots for the Ice, while offense would be led by Jacob Pritchard (one goal and one assist) and Jake Cass (two assists) with two points each. Indiana would be one-for-five on the power play, while Muskegon would go empty on five opportunities of their own.

The Lumberjacks will begin their 2013-14 regular season campaign on Saturday, September 21st in Green Bay against the Gamblers at 8:05 pm with their Home Opener slated for the following weekend on Saturday, September 28th against the Indiana Ice at 7:15 pm.
