Indiana Ice News Release

Three preseason games---one even strength goal allowed, one shorthand score, and a 3-on-3 overtime time goal.

The Indiana Ice defense appears more than ready after finishing the USHL Eastern Fall Classic with a 2-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Pan Am Pavilion.

Patrick Newell scored what became the game-winner at 17:37 of the first period, burying a backhander as Indiana scored all they would need in the first 20 minutes.

His goal came after Jacob Pritchard deflected Austin Kosack's wrister for a power play goal 9:38 after the opening puck drop.

"I am playing more and feeling more comfortable after breaking in with the Ice last year," commented Newell. "With so many new players this year, we are accountable for each other."

"It starts in the defensive zone because defense wins championships."

Jake Cass earned assists on both Indy scores while Pritchard added his second point of the night with a helper on Newell's tally.

Goaltender Samu Perhonen earned his second preseason win in net, losing a shutout when the Lumberjacks scored with 38 seconds remaining in regulation with their netminder pulled in lieu of an extra skater.

The Finn blanked the Chicago Steel on 34 attempts Monday in a 1-0 Indiana victory. The Ice dropped a 2-1 overtime game Saturday evening to finish the exhibition slate with a 2-0-1 record.

The USHL season begins with Indy on the road Saturday against Team USA in Ann Arbor before returning to Indiana September 27th to the Pan Am Pavilion for their home opener against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
