MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Muskegon Lumberjacks rang in 2022 with a 5-to-4 victory over Team USA U17 on Saturday, Jan. 1 from Mercy Health Arena in downtown Muskegon. Ben Strinden, Quinn Hutson, Jake Richard, Jake Braccini, and Phil Tresca all scored for Muskegon, with Braccini picking up four goals in four consecutive games. With the win, the Lumberjacks are now 3-0 against the U17 squad to start off the new year on the right foot.

1st Period

It did not take long for Team USA to get on the board first, with Charlie Cerrato scoring 90 seconds into the contest. Cerrato's first goal of the season was assisted by Oliver Moore to make it a 1-to-0 lead for Team USA.

The U17's would double their lead with a spectacular tic-tac-toe goal from Oliver Moore at 6:50 of the first period. Moore's goal was assisted by Will Smith and Gabe Perrault to give Team USA a 2-to-0 lead.

But just under two minutes later, the Lumberjacks responded with a goal from Ben Strinden at 7:36 to put Muskegon on the board. Strinden's 13th of the season was assisted by Quinn Hutson to make it a 2-to-1 game, still in favor of Muskegon.

But at 10:48 of the first period, Beckett Hendrickson regained the two-goal lead for Team USA. Hendrickson's third lamplighter of the season was helped by Zeev Buium and Zach Schulz to make it a 3-to-1 lead for Team USA.

After one period of action, the Lumberjacks trailed Team USA U17 by a score of 3-to-1.

2nd Period

The Lumberjacks pulled within one after a goal from Quinn Hutson, who was celebrating his 20th birthday. Hutson's goal at 16:29 was assisted by Ben Strinden and Joey Larson to make it a 3-to-2 score.

Less than a minute later, Jake Richard tied the game for Muskegon at 17:49 of the middle period. Quinn Hutson scored the lone assist on Richard's fifth goal of the season to even the score 3-to-3.

Through 40 minutes of action, both teams skated to a 3-to-3 tie heading into the second intermission.

3rd Period

With the score tied at three, Team USA was able to retake the lead with a shorthanded goal from Gracyn Sawchyn at 5:24 of the period. Sawchyn's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Ryan Fine to give the U17's a 4-to-3 lead.

But the lead would not hold as Muskegon tied the game once again at 10:16, this time from Jake Braccini, scoring a goal in four consecutive games. Braccini's 12th of the season was assisted by Joey Larson and David Hymovitch to level the score 4-to-4.

While on the power play, Lumberjacks forward Phil Tresca clocked in with the eventual game-winning goal at 11:13 to put Muskegon in front by a score of 5-4. Tresca's PPG was assisted by Jack Williams and Noah Ellis.
