Luke Bakula, Brent Teller Named 2017 NECBL All-Stars
July 23, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
Bakula will be the starting designated hitter, while Teller is one of the nine pitchers chosen to represent the Southern Division of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The All-Star Game will be held next Sunday, July 30th, at Joe Wolfe Field, which is the home of the North Adams SteepleCats.
Bakula, a junior from Ballwin, MO, has been at or near the top of the NECBL in batting average for the entire 2017 season. He began the season on a tear at the plate, hitting safely in 14 of his first 15 games with the Bay Sox, including a 13-game hitting streak from June 9th to June 27th where he was 23-for-61 (.377). He had his two best performances of the season against Newport, going 2-for-5 with a season-high four RBIs in the first game of the year, and knocking four hits with two runs scored in an 8-0 home victory on July 6th. Bakula has 15 multi-hit games in 34 contests this season, and hit his only homer of the season on July 5th at Vermont.
As of July 22nd, Bakula is eighth in the NECBL with a .333 batting average, but leads the league in hits (44). He is tied for third on the Bay Sox in RBIs with 16, and is fourth in on-base percentage (.378), slugging percentage (.402) and OPS (.780) on the squad.
Teller, a junior from Miami, FL, began the season in the Bay Sox rotation, then spent the first two weeks of July pitching out of the bullpen before starting in Game 2 of a doubleheader against Danbury on July 19th. He has been near the top of the NECBL in ERA for the entire season, as he allowed just six earned runs total in his 32.1 innings of work so far this year. After tossing exactly five innings in each of his first four starts, Teller spun a seven-inning, complete game six-hitter on July 19th in New Bedford's 4-2 victory.
Teller leads the team in wins with three and ERA with the third-best in the NECBL (1.67). He has one of New Bedford's two complete games - Boston College's Jack Nelson tossed the other - and is tied for third on the team in strikeouts with 28.
