Bay Sox Drop After Loss to Newport on Friday Night

New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The recent struggles for the New Bedford Bay Sox continued on Friday evening at Cardines Field, as they dropped to 15-20 in a 7-2 loss to the Newport Gulls.

The Gulls jumped all over Bay Sox starting pitcher Fino Brito (Rutgers) in a five-run second inning that provided more than enough offense for the victory, which evened the season series at three games apiece.

After Brito worked around a leadoff single in the first inning, the home squad pounded out six hits in the offensive barrage in the second. Newport's Liam McGill and Bruce Steel drove in the first two runs with RBI singles, then two more came across the plate on a fielder's choice plus an error by Brito off the bat off J.C. Flowers. Carter Aldrete knocked a single to plate Flowers two batters later for the fifth Gulls' run, and Flowers picked up another RBI in the third with a single that made it 6-0.

A hit batter, a walk, and a single packed the sacks for Newport in the sixth off of reliever Jacob Lamb (Richmond), and McGill walked with two outs to bring home Aldrete for a seven-run advantage.

Newport starter Jack Patterson held the Bay Sox bats in check for the first six innings, allowing just one hit - a third inning single from Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State) - until New Bedford put two runs on the board in the seventh. Luke Bakula (Kansas) led off with a single, and was brought home two batters later via the seventh home run of the season by Dan Schock (Sacred Heart).

The combination of local kids Zack Reid (UMass Dartmouth) and Logan Maitland (CCRI) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings, which gave New Bedford a chance to get back in the contest. The Bay Sox did load the bases in the eighth with two outs, but came up empty after a strikeout from Karsten Sherman (Keiser) which stranded all three runners.

The loss was New Bedford's fifth in their last seven games, and puts their backs up against the wall headed into the last week of the regular season. They enter Saturday's pivotal home game against Winnipesaukee at 15-20, and sit four games behind Mystic for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division.
