Lowgators Relocating to Southwest Florida

Published on June 30, 2004 under NBA G League (G League) News Release

GREENVILLE, S.C., June 30 – National Basketball Development League President Phil Evans announced today the completion of the transaction that will send the Charleston Lowgators to Ft. Myers, Fla. According to NBDL Florida team president Brett Vickers, the team's new nickname, colors and coaching staff will be announced in the very near future.

NBDL Florida inherits a current 10-player roster from the Lowgators, who are the only team to appear in postseason play in each of the league's three seasons. According to NBDL rules, up to four players can be protected from Charleston's season-ending roster and will be assured a spot in training camp.

The NBDL Florida local ownership group has not only purchased the winningest team in NBDL history (89-63, .586), but also inherits NBDL most valuable player Tierre Brown and NBDL Defensive Player of the Year Karim Shabazz.

Charleston was coached by Doug Marty (62-44 in two seasons) and assistant Kelvin Upshaw, who along with the remainder of the front office staff, are not expected to relocate to Ft. Myers.
