Lowgators Pound Flight Friday

January 31, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Huntsville Flight News Release

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Jan. 31, 2003) – It was one of those rare nights where everything came together.

At least that is the way North Charleston head coach Doug Marty thought after his team collected a 112-91 NBDL victory over the Huntsville Flight here Friday night at the Von Braun Center.

"We are very pleased with our guys, because it was a team effort," Marty said. "The guys worked very hard on defense against one of the best teams in the league."

Five Lowgators scored in double figures as they jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. After the Flight took their only lead of the game at 15-14, the Lowgators (16-15) outscored the home squad 16-4 over the remainder of the first quarter to take a 30-19 advantage. Huntsville cut the gap to eight points in the second quarter but trailed by double digits the entire second half and by as many as 22 points down the stretch.

Sedric Webber led the Lowgator charge with 22 points, while Tierre Brown added 20, Ime Udoke tallied 18, Peter Cornell 17 and Tobe Carberry 11.

Cornell played especially well on defense as he collected seven blocks and seven rebounds to go along with his double-digit point total, but Marty was pleased with the play from his entire team.

"Peter played big and he made an extra special effort on defense," Marty said. "A lot things came together for us tonight and the energy comes together. All the guys contributed and we will see where we can go from here."

The Lowgators shot 60 percent for the game as they converted 42-of-70 shots and notched nine blocks.

For the Flight it just wasn't there night as they suffered their worst home loss since Nov. 22, 2002, in a 94-71 setback to Greenville.

"We could not guard them," said Ralph Lewis. "We knew exactly what they were going to do. They are a transition basketball team and they like to get the ball up the floor. We weren't able to stop them out at the perimeter. They penetrated to the basket and got offensive rebounds which is the name of the game."

The Flight got 19 points from both Demetric Shaw and Brandon Williams, while Bakari Hendrix added 16, Lonnie Harrell 13 and Jermaine Walker 11.

It was the second straight victory for the Lowgators as they played the eighth game of their current 10-game road swing. The Flight (15-15) lost for the second straight time.

Huntsville returns to action when they play host to Asheville in a 6 p.m. CT contest Saturday as North Charleston plays at Mobile Sunday in a 4 p.m. CT tilt.
