Loons Edge Whitecaps In Season-Ending Thriller

COMSTOCK PARK, MI- Jaime Pedroza's solo homerun in the top of the tenth propelled the Great Lakes Loons to a 3-2 victory in Friday night's series-deciding game with the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. Great Lakes advances to face Fort Wayne in round two of the playoffs while the Whitecaps end the year with a record of 82-61.
Loons' shortstop Dee Gordon led off the game with an inside-the-park homerun off Whitecaps' starter Luke Putkonen to give Great Lakes a 1-0 lead.
Joe Becker of Great Lakes reached base safely in the third on an error by Brandon Douglas and scored on Ben Guez's two-base error for a 2-0 Loons' advantage.
West Michigan cut the lead in half in the fifth on Douglas' RBI triple that brought home Guez who had walked.
The Whitecaps tied the game 2-2 in the seventh when Billy Nowlin scored from second on shortstop Dee Gordon's two-base throwing error.
In the bottom of the ninth the Whitecaps did not capitalize on a bases-loaded, one-out opportunity with the game tied. The Loons got new life and took the lead the very next inning.
With one out, Jaime Pedroza drove a homerun to right off 'Caps' reliever Tyler Stohr for a 3-2 lead.
The Whitecaps got a one-out double from Brent Wyatt and a walk to Ronnie Bourquin before Avisail Garcia struck out and Ben Guez popped out to end the game.
Whitecaps' pitching was superb as starter Luke Putkonen scattered 6 hits over 6 innings, allowing 2 runs with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.
Tyler Conn pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief. Tyler Stohr takes the loss. He's 0-1.
Brent Wyatt was the only Whitecap with more than one hit. He was 2-5.
